The chewing surfaces of molars are not flat. They contain narrow pits and fissures that are often deeper than a toothbrush bristle is wide. Food debris and bacteria settle into these grooves and stay there, which is why the majority of cavities in children occur on these surfaces.
Sealants fill and smooth those grooves so the surface can be cleaned properly. Research consistently shows sealed molars develop substantially fewer cavities than unsealed ones.
At Rita Marroghi DDS, we recommend sealants for most children — and for adults with deep grooves and no existing decay.
Timing matters. Sealants are most effective when applied soon after a molar erupts, before decay has any chance to begin:
Adults can benefit too. If your back teeth have deep grooves and no fillings, sealants can protect them.
Your dentist checks the back teeth at every routine visit and will recommend sealing when a suitable tooth has erupted fully.
Placing a sealant takes only a few minutes per tooth, involves no drilling, and requires no anesthetic.
The tooth is cleaned and dried, and a preparation solution is applied briefly to help the sealant bond, then rinsed away. The liquid sealant is painted into the grooves, where it flows into every crevice, and a curing light hardens it in seconds.
Your dentist then checks the bite to make sure the sealed tooth meets its opposing tooth comfortably. Your child can eat and drink straight away.
Most children find the appointment easy, which makes it a good early experience of dental treatment.
Sealants typically last three to five years, and often longer.
They are checked at every routine visit for wear or chipping, and can be repaired or reapplied in minutes if needed. A sealant that has partially worn away should be topped up rather than left, since a gap in the coating can trap bacteria.
Sealants protect the chewing surfaces only. Cavities can still form between teeth, so daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleanings remain essential.
Sealants only work if they are placed properly. The tooth must be completely dry during application, which takes patience with a young child, and the bite must be checked afterward.
Dr. Marroghi has cared for families across Walled Lake and Pontiac for over 25 years, treating children of all ages in a calm, unhurried way. We want a child’s early dental visits to be easy ones.
Sealants protect the chewing surfaces. Everything else still applies:
