Oral cancer is highly treatable when it is found early. The five-year survival rate is significantly higher for cancers detected at an early stage than for those found after they have spread. A screening takes only a few minutes and is painless.
Early oral cancer rarely causes pain. It often appears as a small patch or sore that a patient would not think to worry about — and would not see, because many develop on the underside of the tongue, the floor of the mouth, or the back of the throat.
A dental examination is the most common way oral cancer is detected, because a dentist examines these areas routinely and knows what healthy tissue should look like.
At Rita Marroghi DDS, an oral cancer screening is included as part of your regular examination. You do not need to request it or book separately.
The screening is visual and tactile, takes two to three minutes, and involves no discomfort.
Your dentist examines the lips, gums, cheeks, tongue and its underside, the floor and roof of the mouth, and the back of the throat, looking for any change in color, texture, or surface. She then gently feels the jaw, neck, and area beneath the chin for lumps or swelling.
If something looks unusual, it does not mean cancer. Most findings are harmless. Your dentist will explain what she has seen, and may recommend monitoring the area for two weeks or referring you to a specialist for further evaluation.
