Brushing and flossing remove plaque, but once plaque hardens into tartar it bonds to the tooth and cannot be removed at home. A professional cleaning removes it, along with the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.
A cleaning appointment is not only a cleaning. It is also when decay is found while it is still small, when gum changes are measured, and when an oral cancer screening is performed.
Most dental problems are cheaper, simpler, and less uncomfortable to treat when caught at this stage. That is the real value of the six-month visit.
At Rita Marroghi DDS, we treat these appointments as preventive care rather than a formality, and we explain what we find rather than simply booking the next one.
A cleaning appointment usually takes 45 to 60 minutes.
Your teeth and gums are examined first, and the depth of the gum pockets is measured to check for early signs of gum disease. X-rays may be taken to check between the teeth and below the gumline where decay is not visible.
Plaque and tartar are then removed from all tooth surfaces, above and below the gumline, using hand instruments and an ultrasonic scaler. The teeth are polished to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel, and flossed to clear any remaining debris.
Fluoride may be applied, particularly for patients prone to decay and for children. Your dentist completes an examination and an oral cancer screening, then discusses anything that needs attention.
For most patients, every six months.
Some patients benefit from more frequent visits — typically every three to four months:
Your dentist will recommend the interval that suits your mouth rather than applying a standard schedule to everyone.
These are different procedures, and patients often confuse them.
A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and just below the gumline in healthy mouths.
A deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — treats existing gum disease. It reaches further below the gumline, is performed with anesthetic, and usually takes two appointments.
If your gums bleed, feel tender, or have begun receding, you may need periodontal treatment before returning to a routine schedule.
Consistency matters in preventive care. Seeing the same practice over time means changes get noticed — a pocket that has deepened slightly, a shadow on an X-ray, a patch of tissue that was not there last time.
Dr. Marroghi and her team have cared for patients across Walled Lake and Pontiac for over 25 years, and take a gentle approach with patients who find dental visits difficult.
Some sensitivity for a day or two after a cleaning is normal, particularly if a lot of tartar was removed.
